Experience and Expertise

In the laboratory...

- Expertise in micropaleontological sample curation and processing (sieving, microscopy, multi- and single-shell sample preparation).

- Skilled in wet chemical techniques in both conventional and clean laboratories (up to Grade B), including with corrosive materials used in sample cleaning and standard preparation.

- Experience in mass (IRMS, HR-ICP-MS), optical emission (ICP-OES) and off-axis integrated cavity output spectrometry (OA-ICOS).

In the field...

- Over 2 months cumulative experience aboard UNOLS global-class research vessels participating in seagoing expeditions.

- Trained in the deployment, retrieval, onboard processing, and archival of jumbo piston cores, gravity cores, and multicores.

- Trained in CTD deployment and seawater collection/preservation for onshore analyses.

- Knowledgable in deploying autonomous observing platforms (BGC-ARGO, standard moorings, etc.)

In the classroom...

- 3 years of teaching assistant experience w/ a blend of lecture and lab management responsibilities in both introductory and senior capstone Earth Science courses at Old Dominion University.

- Experience developing a 300-level multidisciplinary course on Earth Systems Science based on the popular science book How To Build A Habitable Planet at Rutgers University.

- Certified by the Inclusive STEM Teaching Project.

In the community...

- Participated in over several dozen speaking engagements, including invited seminars (6), guest lectures (5), presentations at major domestic and international conferences (21), and interactions with the general public either through established programs or independently organized outreach (25).

- Strong record of supporting and mentoring a diverse cohort of undergraduate researchers through both institutional- and federally-funded (NSF REU and FWS) programs at Old Dominion and Rutgers Universities (16).

- Over 5 years of experience in elected leadership positions (President, Vice President, Chair, etc.) in graduate student organizations and departmental committees at both Old Dominion and Rutgers Universities.

- Active in the non-profit sector as a member of the Union for Concerned Scientists' Science Network and as Chair of Environmental Justice and Sustainability at Let's Do Good.
